Turkish motor vehicle output plunges in April amid shutdowns

In April this year, Turkey's motor vehicle output totaled 11,164 units, decreasing by 91.3 percent year on year and down 89.19 percent month on month, according to the monthly statistics released by the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers' Association (OSD). In the January-April period of the year, Turkey's motor vehicle output totaled 352,309 units, down by 28 percent year on year.

In April, passenger car output amounted to 9,661 units, falling by 88.4 percent, while commercial vehicle output totaled 1,503 units, down 96.6 percent, both on year-on-year basis. In the January-April period of the current year, passenger car output totaled 244,869 units, decreasing by 24 percent, and commercial vehicle production amounted to 107,440 units, declining by 35.7 percent, both compared to the same period of 2019.

The overall production capacity utilization rate of the Turkish automotive industry was 7.1 percent in April, while the rate was 52.6 percent for the first four months of the year. The extremely low capacity utilization rate is attributed to shutdowns by automakers mostly during April due to the coronavirus pandemic.
