US Costs and Margin Databoard

The interactive databoard for costs and margins in the US steel product markets consists of average monthly steel product costs, prices and margins in the US starting from 2025. All the information and calculations in the study allow readers to assess the current steel market situation in the US and to build a short-term cost and price forecast. All financial data are expressed in a common currency - US dollars.

The cost and margin data cover US steel products produced by BOFs and EAFs (from scrap and DRI) for the domestic and export markets. The interactive databoard consists of cost and margin data for the following steel products:

  • HRC
  • Rebar

The cost structure items are the following: iron ore/pig iron/DRI, coking coal, scrap, ferroalloys, fuel and energy, electrodes, and fixed costs.

The following information is used for cost and margin calculations:

  • average monthly prices for raw material (SteelOrbis);
  • average monthly prices for finished products (SteelOrbis);
  • production volumes and fixed costs (financial/annual reports of public companies, SteelOrbis' calculations);
  • yield rates of raw material (SteelOrbis' calculations, subsidiary reports of public companies);
  • transportation and freight costs (public reports of transportation companies, SteelOrbis' calculations, US producers' data);
  • volumes of raw material purchases by type and country (GTT, ISSB, UN Comtrade Database, Trademap, United States Trade Representative, American Iron and Steel Institute).
