Will SSAB Americas’ $60/nt plate price increase gain traction?

SteelOrbis has confirmed that SSAB Americas has announced it will be raising plat prices by $3.00 cwt. ($66/mt or $60/nt) effective with all new orders. Some sources have indicated that they’re skeptical that the increase will stick, as the spread between US HRC and pate prices are still far above historical norms.

As of today, US plate prices are being heard at roughly $73-$74 cwt. ($1,609-$1,631/mt or $1,460-$1,480/nt), FOB mill, which does not reflect SSAB’s desired increase. In contrast, US HRC prices are holding at $35-$37 cwt. ($772-$816/mt or $700-$740/nt), FOB mill.
