US steel exports up 18.9 percent in May

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in May 2023 increased 18.9 percent from April to total 829,184 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 15.3 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel exports in May totaled $1.49 billion, compared to $1.24 billion in April and $1.36 million in May 2022.

Steel exports to Canada in May increased 9.7 percent to 374,427 mt, and increased 3.4 percent from May 2022. Exports to Mexico increased 33.1 percent month-on-month to 304,305 mt, which is up 31.2 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in May include: Brazil, with 4,555 mt; Bahamas, with 2,586 mt; India, with 2,431 mt; China, with 2,383 mt; and Australia, with 2,149 mt.

Major steel products exported in May include HDG, at 135,233 mt; cut-length plates, at 119,394 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 77,534 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 69,474 mt; and beams, at 34,399 mt.
