India’s crude steel output up 11% in FY 2025-26, exports up 36%, imports down 32%

India’s crude steel production in the fiscal year 2025-26 has been estimated at 168.4 million mt, a rise of 10.7 percent year on year, according to a statement from the ministry of steel on Thursday, April 9.

The ministry said that Indian finished steel exports during the fiscal year amounted to 6.6 million mt, up 35.9 percent, while imports declined by 31.7 percent, both year on year, while the actual tonnage imported during the year was not disclosed.

Domestic steel consumption in the fiscal year 2025-26 reached 164 million mt, up eight percent year on year, supported by demand from the infrastructure sector.

Total domestic steel production capacity during 2025-26 was about 220 million mt.
