According to preliminary census data, US monthly steel imports in May 2017 increased 2.5 percent from April (census data) to total 3,115,272 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 19.4 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in May totaled $2.59 billion, compared to $2.50 billion in April and $1.77 billion in May 2016.
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the finished steel import market share was an estimated 27 percent in May and is estimated at 26 percent YTD.
Top sources for US steel imports in May include: Canada, with 514,488 mt; Brazil, with 513,889 mt; Korea, with 298,527 mt; Mexico, with 266,543 mt; and Russia, with 244,240 mt.
Major steel products imported in May include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 762,133 mt; HDG sheets and strip, at 292,002 mt; OCTG, at 234,094 mt; CRC, at 188,803 mt; line pipe, at 166,924 mt; and HRC, at 159,779 mt.
