US steel imports fall 4.3 percent in December

According to US preliminary census data, US monthly steel imports in December 2016 decreased 4.3 percent from November (census data) to total 2,436,375 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 9.5 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in December totaled $1.894 billion, compared to $1.890 billion in November and $1.78 billion in December 2015.
 
Top sources for US steel imports in December include: Canada, with 391,859 mt; Brazil, with 322,782 mt; Korea, with 232,707 mt; Mexico, with 219,294 mt; Russia, with 156,321 mt; and Turkey, with 139,005 mt.
 
Major steel products imported in December include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 473,932 mt; HDG, at 276,628 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 172,329 mt; OCTG, at 150,336 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 146,857 mt; and rebar, at 129,158 mt.
