US steel imports down 15.2 percent in July

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in July 2023 decreased 15.2 percent from June to total 2,151,264 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows an 11.4 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel imports in July totaled $3.01 billion, compared to $3.23 billion in June and $3.92 billion in July 2022.

Top sources for US steel imports in July include: Canada, with 481,953 mt; Brazil, with 348,429 mt; Mexico, with 263,673 mt; South Korea, with 143,132 mt; and Japan, with 110,942 mt.

By product group, semi-finished imports totaled 475,110 mt in July, down from 711,153 mt in June but up from 344,916 mt in July 2022. Flat product imports totaled 739,086 mt in July, down from 835,814 mt in June and 917,375 mt in July 2022. Long product imports totaled 450,343 mt in July, down from 490,923 mt in June and 578,301 mt in July 2022. Pipe and tube imports totaled 402,880 mt in July, down from 423,940 mt in June and 485,124 mt in July 2022.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the US steel import market share in July 2023 was estimated at 21 percent, compared to 23 percent in June and 22 percent year-to-date.
