US steel import permits up 2.5 percent in October

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of October totaled 2,813,476 mt. This was a 2.5 percent increase from the 2,745,232 mt in permits recorded in September and a 0.5 percent increase from the September census import total of 2,799,753 mt.

In October, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 554,168 mt; OCTG, at 282,685 mt; HDG, at 222,646 mt; CRC, at 197,511 mt; line pipe, at 159,213 mt; and HRC, at 155,733 mt. 

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in October were Canada (489,140 mt), Brazil (327,280 mt), Korea (295,725 mt), Russia (260,975 mt), and Mexico (257,562 mt).
