US steel import permits down 7.7 percent in September

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of September totaled 2,484,846 mt. This was a 7.7 percent decrease from the permits recorded in August and a 7.6 percent decrease from the August census import total.

In September, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 644,451 mt; HRC, at 242,964 mt; HDG, at 220,983 mt; OCTG, at 158,089 mt; line pipe, at 147,320 mt; and CRC, at 143,978 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in September were Brazil (466,183 mt), Canada (346,913 mt), Mexico (236,966 mt), Korea (216,722 mt), and Turkey (151,236 mt).
