US steel exports rise 13 percent for full-year 2017

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, full-year steel exports in 2017 increased 13.0 percent from 2016 to total 9,550,115 mt. In terms of value, US steel exports in 2017 totaled $12.5 billion, compared to $10.8 billion in 2016.

Steel exports to Canada in 2017 increased 10.8 percent from the preceding year to 4,678,134 mt. Exports to Mexico increased by 11.9 percent year-on-year in 2017 to 3,735,348 mt.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in 2017 include: Italy, with 124,895 mt; India, with 92,613 mt; China, with 87,314 mt; Belgium, with 66,558 mt; and Brazil, with 50,250 mt.

Major steel products exported in 2017 include HDG, at 1,322,580 mt; cut-length plates, at 1,086,627 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 906,099 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 612,310 mt; and plates in coils, at 579,826 mt.
