US steel exports rise 10.5 percent in January

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in January 2018 increased 10.5 percent from December to total 754,038 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 1.6 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in January totaled $1.05 billion, compared to $930.7 million in December and $908.4 million in January 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in January increased 24.1 percent from the preceding month to 389,531 mt, and increased 5.4 percent from January 2017. Exports to Mexico increased by 6.9 percent month-on-month to 272,550 mt, which is down 9.5 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in January include: Italy, with 15,107 mt; Netherlands, with 10,047 mt; Honduras, with 7,402 mt; China, with 4,868 mt; and India, with 4,827 mt.

Major steel products exported in January include HDG, at 105,827 mt; cut-length plates, at 77,954 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 61,200 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 43,810 mt; and heavy structural shapes, at 40,419 mt.
