US steel exports drop 28.2 percent in July

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in July 2018 decreased 28.2 percent from June to total 595,057 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows an 18.7 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel exports in July totaled $876.6 million, compared to $1.21 billion in June and $977.8 million in July 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in July decreased 44.6 percent from the preceding month to 260,315 mt, and decreased 25.5 percent from July 2017. Exports to Mexico decreased by 0.9 percent month-on-month to 262,480 mt, which is down 15.3 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in July include: Malta, with 16,241 mt; China, with 7,293 mt; India, with 3,382 mt; Korea, with 2,859 mt; and Germany, with 2,711 mt.

Major steel products exported in July include HDG, at 89,786 mt; cut-length plates, at 68,639 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 49,967 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 41,140 mt; and heavy structural shapes, at 32,986 mt.
