US steel exports drop 0.9 percent in April

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in April 2018 decreased 0.9 percent from March to total 781,091 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 0.4 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in April totaled $1.09 billion, compared to $1.11 billion in March and $1.06 billion in April 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in April decreased 4.5 percent from the preceding month to 402,093 mt, but increased 2.0 percent from April 2017. Exports to Mexico increased by 9.2 percent month-on-month to 293,644 mt, which is down 3.1 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in April include: Italy, with 11,197 mt; China, with 6,772 mt; Belgium, with 6,769 mt; India, with 5,194 mt; and Dominican Republic, with 3,209 mt.

Major steel products exported in April include HDG, at 119,161 mt; cut-length plates, at 78,394 mt; heavy structural shapes, at 53,736 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 52,379 mt; and cold rolled sheets, at 45,726 mt.
