US steel exports down 9.6 percent in September

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in September 2018 decreased 9.6 percent from August to total 530,575 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 35.3 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel exports in September totaled $816.1 million, compared to $886.4 million in August and $1.04 billion in September 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in September decreased 4.9 percent from the preceding month to 243,035 mt, and decreased 37.4 percent from September 2017. Exports to Mexico decreased by 14.2 percent month-on-month to 227,358 mt, which is down 30.4 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in September include: China, with 6,704 mt; Italy, with 3,762 mt; India, with 3,397 mt; Brazil, with 2,865 mt; and Pakistan, with 2,620 mt.

Major steel products exported in September include HDG, at 95,444 mt; cut-length plates, at 61,192 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 36,486 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 32,187 mt; and hot rolled bars, at 25,989 mt.
