US standard rail imports surge upward in June

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of standard rail totaled 26,710 mt in June 2019, up significantly from 584 mt in May but down 0.7 percent from June 2018 levels. By value, standard rail imports totaled $19.3 million in June 2019, compared to $514,800 in the previous month and $20.3 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most standard rail from Japan in June, with 20,023 mt, compared to zero tonnage in May and 19,987 mt in June 2018. Other top sources of imported standard rail in June include Czech Republic, with 6,537 mt.
