US iron and steel scrap exports down 15.4 percent in January

According to the latest figures from the US International Trade Commission, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled 1,272,800 mt in January 2023, a 15.4 percent decrease month-on-month and a 0.2 percent decrease year-on-year.

Mexico was the largest recipient of US iron and scrap exports in January with 320,960 mt, down 3.2 percent month-on-month but up 5.1 percent year-on-year. Other notable destinations in January include: Turkey, with 247,043 mt; India, with 140,315 mt; Taiwan, with 106,331 mt; and Vietnam, with 83,678 mt.

In terms of value, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled $495.7 million in January 2023, compared to $589.7 million in December and $597.1 million in January 2022.
