Mexican steel companies reach new labor record with 142,449 employed in March

The steel industry in Mexico registered the third consecutive labor record with 142,449 workers in March of this year, 6.1 percent more workers compared to the same month in 2022, according to official data obtained by SteelOrbis.

In the last 12 months, as of March 2023, there have been 10 months with record employment levels, according to formal employment data (registered with the IMSS social security institute) in the Basic Metal Industries, which according to the agency's classifier national statistics Inegi, corresponds to the steel industry.

In March, the largest steel economy among Mexican states, by number of jobs, was Nuevo León with 20.1 percent of the total, followed by Coahuila with 13.8 percent, the State of Mexico with 9.0 percent, Guanajuato with 8.3 percent and Veracruz with 7.9 percent. Together these five states concentrate 59.1 percent of the 142,449 employed workers.
