According to the Italian automotive industry association Anfia, Italy's new car registrations amounted to 86,735 units in December, down 22.5 percent year on year. In the full year of 2012, Italy’s new car registration figure reached 1,402,089 units, down 19.9 percent year on year. December witnessed the 13th consecutive double-digit year-on-year fall in the Italian new car registration figure.

Commenting on the new data, Anfia president Roberto Vavassori stated, “In 2012 we lost 20 percent of the market compared to 2011 and 44 percent compared to the peak witnessed in 2007 which totaled 2,403,105 new registrations”. Mr. Vavassori added, “Among the urgent tasks for 2013, an action plan needs to be developed in order to relaunch the automotive industry in Italy. Indeed, while car demand fell 19.9 percent, according to current available figures Italian car production also collapsed in 2012.”

In October last year (the latest month for which figures are available) Italian car output amounted to 31,128 units, down 20.7 percent year on year. Furthermore, in the January-October period of 2012, Italian car output totaled 351,962 units, down 18.1 percent on year-on-year basis.
