India’s JSW Steel Limited is likely to adopt the electric arc furnace (EAF) route rather than the blast furnace route for its proposed 3 million mt greenfield steel mill project at Kadapa in the southern state of Telangana, company sources said on Thursday, May 4.
The sources said that technology supplies for the EAF route steel mill will be finalized at the company’s forthcoming meeting of board of directors.
In February this year, the Telangana government conducted the ground breaking ceremony at the 3,295 acres of land acquired by JSW Steel Limited’s greenfield steel mill project, estimated to entail an investment of $1.06 billion.
Sources said that an EAF-based mill is preferred as it is less capital intensive compared to a blast furnace and is more environmentally clean, and electricity will be the prime energy source instead of fossil fuel.
They said that in the first phase of 3 million mt per year, the mill will be producing long steel products.
