Indian automobile retail sales across all categories as per new registrations have been provisionally estimated at 2,611,317 units in April 2026, a rise of 12.94 percent year on year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Association (FADA) on Wednesday, May 6.

Passenger vehicles (PV) retail sales were at a record 407,355 units in April 2026, a rise of 12.21 percent, while two-wheelers sales amounted to 1,916,258 units in the same month, marking a growth of 13.01 percent, year on year. Commercial vehicles also witnessed a growth of 15.02 percent year on year to 99,339 units, FADA data showed.

FADA said that PV inventory levels have moved up modestly to a range of 28-30 days, marginally above the March 2026 level of 28 days, but well within the healthy band that constitutes a “constructive trend”.

FADA, however, noted that the India Meteorological Department's forecast of an above-normal heatwave across several states, the geopolitical situation in West Asia and its potential pass-through to fuel prices, and selective supply constraints affecting models remain factors to watch out for in the two-wheeler segment.
