Namibia-based HyIron Green Technologies has announced that it will build a hydrogen direct reduction iron (DRI) plant for the production of green iron in Lingen, Germany.
The Lower Saxony Ministry of Environment is providing €3 million in funds for the construction of the plant, which will be the world’s largest direct reduction iron plant.
German nuclear electric power generation company RWE and Austria-based pipe producer Benteler Steel/Tube, associated partners involved in the project, are testing the use of sponge iron in steel production from 2024 with this project.
Lingen has been chosen due to the high density of hydrogen projects in the region and RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant site. In the future, green hydrogen for HyIron will be produced at RWE’s 14-megawatt pilot electrolysis plant.
