Apparent consumption of steel plates (coil and sheet) in Mexico decreased 91,000 metric tons (mt) or 25.9 percent, year-over-year, in May, to 261,000 mt, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
According to the chamber, production decreased 20.4 percent or 45,000 mt, totaling 176,000 mt. It is the lowest volume in the last five months. Steel plate was the fifth most consumed finished steel product in Mexico.
In May, 101,000 mt of plates were imported into the Mexican market, 35.3 percent or 55,000 mt less compared to the same month in 2023. In the given month, 23,000 mt were exported, 51.1 percent or 24,000 mt less compared to the same month last year.
In the January-May period, 1.48 million mt were consumed and production totaled 1.02 million mt, volumes that represent annual decreases of 12.7 and 13.0 percent, in the same order, compared to the same period last year.
