Commission meets tomorrow for definitive EU measures

As already reported by SteelOrbis, EU is preparing to bring the definitive safeguard measures on steel imports to replace the provisional safeguard measures, that are to expire by September 28, 2002. Products covered under the planned definitive measures are in 7 categories, namely; HRC, HR sheet and plate, HR narrow strips , alloyed HR flat products, cold rolled steel sheet in coils, flanges, fittings whereas the provisional measures were covering 14 product categories. As understood from the latest reports from the industry, EU intends to keep the product number included in the definitive safeguard measures at 7 however in the meantime to investigate any increase of 10% or more on the imports of the remaining categories despite the strong pressure from the 10 out of 15 member countries for the quarto plate and rebar to be also included. A meeting is scheduled to be held by the Commission on September 25, in order to clarify the details of the proposed definitive measures.
