Buyers and sellers of US domestic hollow structural sections (HSS) have said they’re keeping close tabs on the recent price softening that’s been taking place within the US flat rolled steel market.

“There’s been a lot of deal-making going on when it comes to HRC,” a source said, “and the HSS market is watching closely.”

Another source confirmed that the downtrend in HRC pricing has HSS prices trending soft, adding that he expects to see a downward adjustment in spot market prices in the very near future.

“Demand is steady but not robust,” he said. “There are a lot of deals out there especially since you have two of the largest HSS mills in a tug-of-war for market share.”

At current, the most commonly heard spot market price for US domestic hollow structural sections (HSS) is “officially” trending between $48.50-$50.00 cwt. ($1069-$1102/mt or $970-$1000/nt), ex-mill, although deal-making below that range has become increasingly prevalent for those who are looking to book significant tonnage.
