US steel import permits up 8.8 percent in November

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of November totaled 2,585,403 mt. This was an 8.8 percent increase from the 2,813,476 mt in permits recorded in October and a 10.5 percent increase from the October census import total of 2,856,041 mt.

In November, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 497,858 mt; OCTG, at 251,512 mt; HDG, at 235,042 mt; CRC, at 159,498 mt; HRC, at 148,898 mt; and plates in coils, at 119,738 mt. 

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in November were Canada (484,661 mt), Brazil (433,157 mt), Mexico (243,404 mt), Korea (195,817 mt), and Germany (154,958 mt).
