US steel exports up 5.2 percent in August

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in August 2023 increased 5.2 percent from July to total 805,826 mt.

A year-on-year comparison shows a 10.9 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in August totaled $1.43 billion, compared to $1.34 billion in July and $1.38 million in August 2022.

Steel exports to Canada in August increased 10.8 percent to 377,592 mt, and increased 16.1 percent from August 2022. Exports to Mexico decreased 2.6 percent month-on-month to 370,626 mt, which is up 6.9 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in August include: Malta, with 9,101 mt; Dominican Republic, with 5,194 mt; United Kingdom, with 4,588 mt; Australia, with 2,625 mt; and China, with 2,537 mt.

Major steel products exported in August include HDG, at 139,300 mt; cut-length plates, at 102,119 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 83,645 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 69,168 mt; and beams, at 37,798 mt.
