Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it will revamp the argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) converter of Sandvik Materials Technology, a subsidiary of the Swedish high-technology engineering and steelmaking group Sandvik, at its stainless steel mill in Sandviken, Sweden. Commissioning is scheduled for August this year.

The AOD converter to be revamped by SMS will be equipped with a new tilt drive system featuring a new gearwheel design developed by SMS Group. With this new design, the productivity of the converter can be increased without the need for additional space.

Sandvik Materials Technology operates around the world as a developer and producer of advanced stainless steels and special alloys.
