According to a media statement by the government of Western Australia, Port Hedland has increased its potential shipping capacity by 6.9 percent or 40 million tons to 617 million tons per year, which will support industry in Pilbara, Australia to further maximize tonnages.

The increase in shipping capacity is driven by industry investment, such as capital dredging, innovative marine technology and other port efficiencies.

Annual capacity allocations for each port user will remain at the same levels, though users will be able to gain more capacity above their allocated tonnages by accessing D-class shipping opportunities under the Port Hedland Vessel Movement Protocols.
