Russia-based leading global iron ore and hot briquetted iron (HBI) producer Metalloinvest has announced that the company’s subsidiary Oskol Metallurgical Plant (OEMK) has reached 70 million mt in its overall production to date of DRI (direct reduced iron), which is a raw material suited for use in production of high-quality steel grades.
According to Metalloinvest’s statement, the total production capacity of its four DRI plants is currently over 3.2 million mt per year. On the other hand, OEMK is the only integrated steel company in Russia that carries out direct reduction of iron and smelting in electric furnaces, which allows for steel production that is free from harmful impurities and residual elements. In 2017, OEMK produced approximately four million mt of iron ore pellets, three million mt of DRI and 3.5 million mt of steel.
In 2018, OEMK again produced about four million mt of iron ore pellets, up slightly on 2017 production, 3.2 million mt of DRI and 3.4 million mt of steel.
