The Russian mining and steel producing group Mechel has announced the commissioning of three new production lines at its Romania-based subsidiary Mechel Campia Turzii. The lines in question include a metal fiber production and packing line, a line for extension and enlargement of reinforcing wire coils, and a steel wire production shop. The total investments in the projects amounted to €7 million.

"The completion of new projects at the Mechel Campia Turzii plant is in line with Mechel's strategic investment program. The commissioning of new equipment will allow us to significantly increase productivity and quality of the plant's products, reduce cost price and bring the plant's product portfolio into compliance with the current market needs," Mechel's senior vice president  Vladimir Polin stated.

The new line for metal fiber production and packing, supplied by the company Eurolls Italia, has a planned production capacity of 3,000 mt per year and will allow Mechel Campia Turzii to become one of the few manufacturers of this product in Romania. The metal fiber, which is used for reinforcement of concrete, will be sold both in the domestic and international construction markets.

The line for extension and enlargement of reinforcing wire coils, supplied by the German equipment manufacturer Koch, has a planned production capacity of 81,000 mt per year. The finished product is reinforcing wire of premium quality used for construction of industrial and civil structures in zones with increased seismic activity. The production line consists of equipment with improved productivity and manufactures coils of 2,500-5,000 kg weight. Heavy coils are preferred by customers and are in high demand in the market. The product meets DIN 488 German standard, BST 500 mark.

Mechel Campia Turzii's new equipment in the steel wire production shop includes up-to-date wire drawing mills and produces wire with high carbon content. One of the lines draws wire in a range of 2.8 to 4.5 mm, while the other three lines draw wire in a range of 0.6 to 3 mm. Increased efficiency is achieved by using rolled wire of 5.5 to 6 mm diameter packed in heavy coils of 2.5 mt weight. The finished product is supplied in Z2 and Z3 coils with weight range from 400 to 1,100 kg. The speed of wire drawing is 30 meters per second, while the average monthly productivity is 1,000 mt. Mechel Campia Turzii is one of the first plants in Eastern Europe to commission such equipment, which was also delivered by Koch.

"Mechel keeps following its priority directions in development, increasing the share of high value-added downstream products in its product portfolio," Mr. Vladimir Polin said.
