Japanese steelmaker JFE Steel Corporation has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese companies Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX), JGC Holdings Corporation (JGC) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE) to jointly develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Malaysia.

The companies aim to establish a CCS value chain, from carbon separation and capture at JFE’s steelworks, to marine transportation of liquefied carbon to the receiving points in Malaysia.

JAPEX, JGC and K LINE have been proceeding with a joint study with Malaysian energy company PETRONAS, including study on suitable sites for carbon storage in Malaysia and its technical evaluations, carbon capture and the potential for transportation of carbon to destinations outside Malaysia including Japan.

The project of the four Japanese companies will also be aligned with the study with PETRONAS.
