Japan’s steel scrap exports down 9.8 percent in January-March 2026

In March this year, Japanese ferrous scrap exports amounted to 596,603 mt, down by 7.6 percent compared to 645,445 mt in the same month of the previous year, according to customs statistics. In the January-March period this year, the country exported 1.68 million mt of scrap, down by 9.8 percent year on year.

During the given period, Vietnam was the biggest importer of Japanese scrap, importing 763,398 mt, down by 8.9 percent year on year. Vietnam was followed by Bangladesh and South Korea, importing 311,271 mt and 288,423 mt of scrap, up 13.6 percent and down 18.4 percent, respectively, year on year.

Meanwhile, Japanese scrap exports to Thailand amounted to 111,069 mt in the January-March period this year, up from 58,379 mt in the same period of the previous year.
