Japan’s steel scrap exports down 10.9 percent in January-February 2026

In February this year, Japanese ferrous scrap exports amounted to 628,383 mt, down by 5.5 percent compared to 665,219 mt in the same month of the previous year, according to customs statistics. In the January-February period this year, the country exported 1.09 million mt of scrap, down by 10.9 percent year on year.

During the given period, Vietnam was the biggest importer of Japanese scrap, importing 500,362 mt, down by 9.1 percent year on year. Vietnam was followed by South Korea and Bangladesh, importing 208,132 mt and 179,390 mt of scrap, down 13.8 percent and up 4.4 percent, respectively, year on year.

Meanwhile, Japanese scrap exports to Thailand amounted to 71,504 mt in the January-February period this year, up from 40,559 mt in the same period of the previous year.
