JAMA: Japan must take steps to boost next-generation car sales

On November 28, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) released its ‘Report on Environmental Protection Efforts: Promoting Sustainability in Road Transport in Japan' describing the measures taken by Japan's automakers to reduce the environmental impact of their products and production activities.

The report states that, in order to attain the Japanese government's goal of a 50 percent market share for alternative-energy/next-generation vehicles out of total domestic passenger car sales by 2020, various incentive measures, including subsidies, tax breaks and infrastructure development must be implemented. Without such government assistance, JAMA estimates that the share of alternative-energy/next-generation vehicles in total vehicle sales will level off at around 10 percent.
