Investment in Canadian building construction decreases 2.1 percent in February 2026

According to Statistics Canada, month over month, investment in building construction declined by 2.1 percent to $23 billion in February. Investment in the residential sector decreased 3.3 percent in February, while investment in the non-residential sector increased 0.7% percent.

Investment in residential building construction decreased by $552.3 million to $16 billion in January.

Nationally, investment in detached single-family homes increased by $77.7 million to $7.4 billion in February. Gains in Quebec (+$103.1 million), New Brunswick (+$48.2 million) and Manitoba (+$24.2 million) were partially offset by declines in Ontario (-$54.4 million) and Saskatchewan (-$45.8 million).

Investment in the non-residential sector increased by $49.1 million to $7.0 billion in February.  Investment in the institutional component increased by 0.9 percent to $2.2 billion, the industrial component increased by 0.7 percent to $1.3 billion, and the commercial component increased by 0.6 percent to $3.6 billion.
