India’s SAIL to increase ferroalloy plant capacity by 70 percent

Wednesday, 08 August 2012 11:00:18 (GMT+3)   |
Indian state-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited's (SAIL) Chandrapur Ferro Alloys Plant (CFP) will expand its ferroalloy production capacity by 70 percent from its current level of 100,000 mt per year by installing one 45 MVA submerged arc furnace, a company official said on Wednesday, August 8.

CFP produces manganese-based ferroalloys and supplies SAIL's integrated mills. The official however declined to disclose the amount of investment required for the expansion.

The expansion of ferroalloy production capacity at CFP is in line with SAIL's expansion of steelmaking capacity to 24 million mt per year from 13 million mt per year, with SAIL's overall expansion project scheduled to be completed in 2013.

SAIL has also announced a joint venture with MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited) to construct a 160,000 mt per year ferroalloy plant in the central Indian province of Chattisgarh, entailing an investment of $73 million.

The project will produce 31,000 mt per year of ferromanganese and 75,000 mt per year of silicomanganese and price negotiations amid tenders floated for the furnace are currently ongoing, an official said.
