In April this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 17.1 percent in the euro area and by 17.3 in the EU-27, as compared with March, recording the largest-ever declines month on month. Industrial production in March had decreased by 11.3 percent in the euro area and by 10.4 percent in the EU-27, on month-on-month basis. In April this year compared with April 2019, industrial production fell by 28 percent in the euro area and by 27.2 percent in the EU-27, showing the largest-ever year-on-year decreases. These figures are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union.
As compared to March, in April this year the production of capital goods decreased by 26.6 percent in the euro area and by 27.3 percent in the EU-27, while the production of intermediate goods was down by 15.6 percent in the euro area and by 14.9 in the EU-27, both month on month. Output of non-durable consumer goods was down by 11.9 percent in the euro area and by 10.7 percent in the EU-27, both month on month. In April this year, the production of energy decreased by 4.8 percent in the euro area and by five percent in the EU-27, while the production of durable goods was down by 28.9 percent in the euro area and by 27.8 percent in the EU-27, all month on month.
Among the member states, in April the highest month-on-month decreases were recorded in Hungary (30.5%), Romania (27.7%) and Slovakia (26.7%).
As compared to the same month of 2019, in April this year production of energy declined by 12.8 percent in the euro area and by 12.4 percent in the EU-27. In the same month, production of intermediate goods fell by 25.5 percent in the euro area and by 23.6 percent in the EU-27, while production of durable consumer goods was down by 47.7 percent in the euro area and by 45.4 percent in the EU-27, all year on year. In April this year, production of non-durable consumer goods declined by 14 percent in the euro area and by 12.5 percent in the EU-27, while production of capital goods moved down by 40.9 percent in the euro area and by 40.8 percent in the EU-27, all on year-on-year basis.
Among the member states for which data are available, in April the largest year-on-year decreases in industrial production were registered in Luxembourg (43.9%), Italy (42.5%) and Slovakia (42%), while the only increase was observed in Ireland (5.5%).
