Canadian media reported Wednesday that a $15 million ferry terminal to be built in British Columbia but leased by the Alaska Department of Highways must be constructed with US-produced steel. The Prince Rupert terminal will serve as a stopping point for ferries shuttling between the two countries.

According to the US’ Buy America legislation, all US transportation infrastructure projects must use American-made products. The Canadian government and many private sector firms have objected to the requirement, alleging that it impedes free trade.
