Total global crude steel output reached 1.55 billion mt in 2012, up slightly from 1.54 billion mt in 2011, according to the ‘World Steel in Figures' report published by World Steel Association (worldsteel) on June 1.
According to the report which provides essential facts and statistics about the global steel industry, in 2012 world average steel use per capita was 216.9 kg, up slightly compared to the 216.4 kg recorded in 2011. Average per capita steel consumption in Asia stood at 243.5 kg in 2012, rising from 241.4 kg in 2011. Meanwhile, in the EU the 2012 average was down from 307.7 kg in 2011, amounting to 278.5 kg. In the CIS countries, the average was 218.2 kg, up from 211.4 kg in 2011. Per capita steel consumption in 2012 was 281.1 kg in the NAFTA region, up from 243.7 kg in the previous year, while it was 229.9 kg in the Middle East, up from 221.9 kg in 2011. Meanwhile, per capita consumption of steel in Turkey was 381.9 kg in 2012, rising from 365.7 kg in 2011.
