US steel import permits down 0.9 percent in June

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of June totaled 2,668,552 mt. This was a 0.9 percent decrease from the 2,693,426 mt in permits recorded in May and a 1.3 percent decrease from the May census import total of 2,657,739 mt.

In June, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 799,821 mt; HDG, at 219,891 mt; OCTG, at 204,179 mt; HRC, at 167,214 mt; CRC, at 155,052 mt; and line pipe, at 151,729 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in June were Canada (384,828 mt), Brazil (378,760 mt), Russia (326,744 mt), Mexico (262,347 mt), and Korea (187,574 mt).
