US steel exports fall 0.4 percent in May

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in May 2018 decreased 0.4 percent from April to total 778,069 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 14.8 percent decline. In terms of value, US steel exports in May totaled $1.14 billion, compared to $1.09 billion in April and $1.22 billion in May 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in May decreased 4.7 percent from the preceding month to 383,280 mt, and decreased 26.1 percent from May 2017. Exports to Mexico increased by 4.3 percent month-on-month to 306,370 mt, which is up 5.1 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in May include: China, with 10,350 mt; India, with 7,575 mt; Brazil, with 5,427 mt; United Kingdom, with 4,050 mt; and Belgium, with 3,825 mt.

Major steel products exported in May include HDG, at 115,731 mt; cut-length plates, at 78,504 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 56,899 mt; heavy structural shapes, at 50,714 mt; and cold rolled sheets, at 46,057 mt.
