US iron and steel scrap exports rise 3.6 percent in 2016, but fall in value

According to the latest figures from the US International Trade Commission, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled 13,230,053 mt for the full year 2016, a 3.6 percent increase from the full-year 2015 total of 12,768,065 mt.
 
Turkey was the largest recipient of US iron and scrap exports in 2016, with 3,168,476 mt, which is down 20.0 percent from 2015. Other notable destinations in 2016 include: Mexico, with 2,049,082 mt; Taiwan, with 1,366,039 mt; India, with 1,112,817 mt; China, with 887,761 mt; and Korea, with 847,834 mt.
 
In terms of value, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled $3.59 billion in 2016, a 10.4 percent decrease compared to the 2015 total export value of $4.01 billion.
