Japanese automaker Toyota has confirmed its commitment to invest in its new Guanajuato plant, located in the city of Apaseo el Grande, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The plant is expected to start up by 2019 and should generate about 7,000 jobs in two different phases. Investments should reach nearly $1 billion.

The commitment by the Japanese automaker to continue investing in Mexico was confirmed this week by Toyota executives, as the governor of Guanajuato, Miguel Marquez, met with the company’s VP, Osamu Nagata.

“Mr. Nagata reaffirmed the [company’s] commitment … in Guanajuto, and for us that is the most fundamental [thing], despite the complex global policies going on,” Marquez said.

The Mexican plant is expected to produce about 200,000 units per year of the Corolla model at its first stage of operations. Construction of the plant began last year, and it is expected to complete in 2018.
