German plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it will upgrade Taiwanese steelmaker Dragon Steel Co.’s blast furnace No. 1 at its Taichung works with pulverized coal injection (PCI) technology.

For the modifications, the BF1 will be stopped and is projected to be restarted in the new configuration including the upgraded PCI technology later in 2025.

This project, which will considerably reduce the gas input into the blast furnace resulting in a reduced coke rate, is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2,865 mt annually.

Dragon Steel is a subsidiary of Taiwanese steelmaker China Steel Corporation.
