Port Authority CEO Alec Dreyer said Tuesday that steel had another excellent month in September with throughput totaling about 340,000 net tons (nt), more than four times higher than the September 2009 level. Dreyer said the 41 percent year-over-year increase in Turning Basin revenue directly correlates to the rise in steel shipments this year.

Dreyer also increased his prediction for the amount of steel tonnage the port will handle this year to 2.7 nt, up 0.4 million from his earlier estimate. His forecast is still down from the record 6 million nt imported by the Port Authority during the peak in 2008.
