Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced that it will invest in a series of environmental improvement projects at its Cherepovets Steel Mill aiming at ensuring global best practice sustainability standards are in place by 2015.

In 2012 alone, Severstal's investment target in respect of these projects is approximately RUR 1 billion ($32 million), with the targeted total investment until 2015 amounting to RUR 5.5 billion ($175.9 million). The projects will focus on reducing inorganic particulate and hydrogen sulfide emissions into the atmosphere, which is currently the main challenge of the company.

Additionally, Severstal also plans an RUR 840 million ($26.9 million) construction project to cut down inorganic particulate emissions in sinter production.
