Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced that it has completed the reconstruction of five electrostatic precipitators in the agglomeration plant at its Cherepovets site. The company invested over RUB 798 million in four years to finish the project.

Since 2020, as part of its clean air program, Severstal has been gradually replacing five electrostatic precipitators of the air cleaning system to reduce dust emissions in sintering production. By the end of 2024, the reconstruction of two electrostatic precipitators (No. 11 and No. 12) in the sintering shop No. 3 of Cherepovets site was completed.

According to Severstal’s general director of the Russian Steel and Resource Assets Division, Evgeny Vinogradov, the project included replacing outdated electrostatic precipitators with new units, which allows the reduction of the concentration of dust emissions from 170 mg/m3 to 30 mg/m3. The actual reduction in dust emissions during the implementation of the projects amounted to 260 mt. In general, within the framework of the Russian federal clear air program, the gross emissions of the enterprise were reduced by 90.9 mt (30.7%), and priority pollutants by 15.3 mt (27.6%) from the 2017 levels. This exceeds Severstal's obligations to reduce emissions by at least 20 percent ahead of schedule.
