Indian state-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has committed supplies of 1.2 million mt of rail to government transporter Indian Railways (IR) during the current financial year, an official at the steel company said on Thursday, June 28.

The official said that, even though SAIL fell short in meeting the 900,000 mt of rails to IR during the 2017-18 financial year supply 880,000 mt during the year, in the current fiscal year SAIL is well equipped to meet the higher demand from IR in view of the expansion and modernization of SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), located in Chhattisgarh state.

Following the modernization and expansion of BSP, which was completed earlier this month, the plant’s Universal Rail Mill (URM) capacity increased to 2 million mt per year and SAIL is confident of operating the mill at full capacity, enabling the steel producer to meet the higher volume requirements of IR, the official said.
