The recession in Brazil has helped Mexico take the leading position of auto production in Latin America, according to data released by the automotive industry associations of both countries, Brazil’s Anfavea and Mexico’s AMIA.
According to industry data, Brazil produced 2.1 million vehicles in 2016, while Mexico produced 3.4 million units. Mexico’s booming domestic sales helped it take over primary auto production in the region.
According to AMIA, domestic sales in 2016 rose 18.6 percent, year-on-year, to 1.60 million units.
In addition to becoming Latin America’s top auto producer, Mexico also become the eighth largest auto producer in the world.
